Jani Johansen

How long have you been competing?
First competition was 1993 Finnish Telemark Championships with rental skis just a few weeks after I tried teles for first time. Collected 35 gate penalties out of 37 gates. Didn´t quite make it to the podium smile
Liked the sport though and most of all the freeheeling folks. Also started to do better in comps. Later won Finnish titles on Telemark Giant Slalom and Freeride. Got top ten placements on Tele World Cup. Did also well on some international freeride comps.
But competing has never really been my cup of tea. I have always preferred backcountry and treeriding. Nowadays I enjoy touring on mountains.

Where do you call home?
My soul is out there on the mountains. My house is sitting on Arctic Circle. My Shangri-La are Tamok and Lyngen areas in Northern Norway, just seven hours drive away.

Favorite event or place to practice?
Favorite event is Free'kend at Pyhä, Finland. It's a long weekend with a lot of freeride -oriented stuff. Technique clinics, snow safety courses, equipment tests. Plus tongue-in-cheek competitions such as free-cross, poker-rando and freeride. Snowboarders and skiers all together in same event.

What do you like best about your sport?
I enjoy the freedom of the movement in telemark skiing.  It´s like making constant frontside turns on snowboard. Sure is harder physically. But it keeps me in condition smile

What is the strangest thing that has happened to you while doing your sport?
Strangest and most wonderful thing was when my car broke and I had to stay for another two weeks in Chamonix. And the next day I met the light of my life a.k.a mother of my children.

Do you have a claim to fame (fittest, fastest, funniest, smelliest, etc.)?
I am by far the best sleeper.

Do you promote an annual event or are you involved in a charitable cause?
I´m ambassador for Protect Our Winters Finland.

Any notable recent results?
Three kids. I rest my case.

Anything else we should know about you or your sport?
One love.
